PIVOT Annual Recap
/December 17, 2024
Dear PIVOTers,
Over the course of 2024, PIVOT achieved remarkable milestones that underscore the power of collective action within the Vietnamese American community.
Our 2024 electoral efforts focused on electing progressive Vietnamese American candidates and mobilizing Vietnamese American voters in critical battleground states for the Senate and Presidential campaign.
Our get-out-the-vote postcard writing campaign, powered by more than 130 volunteers, reached 28,000 independent and Democratic-leaning Vietnamese Americans voters with messages in Vietnamese and English. By crafting culturally resonant content and leveraging targeted strategies, we ensured that critical issues impacting Vietnamese Americans and other underrepresented communities were seen and heard. These efforts galvanized voters, amplified our mission, and demonstrated the transformative impact of thoughtful, community-centered advocacy.
Our electoral efforts covered all critical battleground states with significant Vietnamese American votes - Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Nevada, and California. PIVOT’s digital ads efforts delivered 259 million display and video ads across 69,000 websites, apps, and channels, reaching 19 million people, each an average of 13.5 times.
Viet Fact Check (VFC) received the 2024 Gather Award in Community-Centered Journalism, from the Online Journalism Awards, for our contributions to the “Languages of Misinformation” reporting series. We also launched “Sharing Stories, Sharing Trust”, a nationwide series of in-person workshops with Vietnamese communities. VFC partnered with local groups across five states, forming relationships and educating hundreds of elders, students, and community leaders on media literacy and misinformation.
PIVOT has been building out regional chapters, with groups in Washington, Michigan, Texas, Georgia, and Northern and Southern California. Next year we will continue building them up and hope to grow our chapters in other locations throughout the US.
In addition, three Vietnamese American candidates endorsed by PIVOT won their elections this cycle.
Derek Tran, Congressman CA-45:
We proudly played a critical role in electing Derek Tran as the first Vietnamese American to represent Little Saigon in Congress a historic moment for representation and empowerment. This victory was fueled by the tireless efforts of members, who engaged in in-language voter outreach to ensure accessibility for Vietnamese-speaking voters. Even after Election Day, PIVOT members continued to make a difference by assisting with ballot curing, helping ensure that every vote was counted and every voice was heard.
Betty Duong, Santa Clara County Supervisor:
After a decade working for the county at different levels, she becomes the first Vietnamese American Supervisor for Santa Clara County. Having been instrumental in creating the Vietnamese American Service Center and the county's Language Access Policy we are excited to see what she will be able to accomplish in office.
Thai Viet Phan, Santa Ana City Council, Ward 1:
Councilmember Phan wins re-election to her seat on Council after an impactful term. She championed affordable housing policies, addressed public safety, and supported small businesses. We are excited to see her build upon her great work.
The PIVOT network continues to grow, with over 1500 volunteers, donors, and supporters. With the change in administration at the federal level, our communities need us more than ever. PIVOT needs your support whether it is through financial donation and/or joining us as an active volunteer. We hope you will join us in 2025 to continue building up and empowering our Vietnamese American community at home and at the ballot box.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tung Nguyen, PIVOT Board President
