Derek’s parents fled the communist regime in Vietnam to find opportunity, justice, and security in America. He grew up poor, but he was blessed to have the support of his community, through resources like WIC and his parents’ indomitable will to provide for their children. His family saved enough to buy a corner store, sometimes having to protect it themselves against those who didn’t want immigrants in their community.
When he was 18, he enlisted in the Army because he felt a call to serve the country that had given him and his family so much. After his service, he went to law school and became a consumer rights attorney, supporting employees who were harassed, discriminated against, or wrongfully terminated by their greedy corporate employers. He is proud to have won settlements in cases of sexual harassment, LGBTQ discrimination, and unfair treatment of union members by employers.
He is running for office because he wants to continue defending and standing up for immigrant, working class, and marginalized Americans but at the federal level. He wants to enact policies that will positively affect his community members, instead of fighting their battles in court one by one. The same values of opportunity, justice, and security that his parents came to America for are the ones that speak to him and compel him to serve.
